Lee has been fishing for 32 years, ever since he could hold a rod. Starting off in the artlure facet, he began fishing competitively for bass in 2003. Artlure fishing was a tremendous benefit in terms of understanding the behavior patterns of different fish species, many of which are fodder fish for bass.
Lee enjoys the competitive environment of bass fishing and in the last seven years he and Morne, his brother, have achieved various milestones. They are the only team to have won both the SA Bass Cast-4-Cash (2005) as well as the B.E.T.T. (2006) tournament trails. Lee and Morne are currently competing in the B.E.T.T. tournament trail. Although he doesn’t compete on Provincial level because of work constraints, Lee is still a well respected angler among the top anglers in the country.
Lee’s strengths are his ability to experiment with different techniques and baits, always looking for a new way of outwitting the wily green fish. He also tries to fish different venues as much as possible to be able to learn more and be able to experiment.
Lee fishes from a Crackleback 500 boat, built by Escape Baoting, powered with a 225HPDI Yamaha motor. He finds the boat to be very stable and practical fishing platform, without costing an absolute fortune.
His favorite baits are as follows;
Plastics - Damiki Mr Jumbo, Damiki Armour Shad, Damiki Lunker
- Cull-em Frog, Cull-em Lizard
Jig - Damiki Mamba Jig rigged with a Zoom Speed Craw
Rods - Sensation Pro-Elite Series, personal favorite is the 7’2” Heavy Fast Action
Line - Gamma Fluorocarbon 14lb, Gamma Co-polymer 16lb clear.
Morne has been fishing since the age of 3. He and his brother Lee fish together and spent twenty years participating in artlure angling. The highlight was winning the Artlure National Championships at Boskop Dam in 1989. Morne then took a 10 year sabbatical while he played professional cricket. When he returned to angling he soon got involved in bass fishing. Morne got off to a good start, winning his first cast for cash he participated in at Rust de Winter Dam.
Morne, together with his brother Lee are currently competing in the B.E.T.T. tournament trail and he competes in the SA Bass Cast-4-Cash when time permits. He has plans to compete in the Northern Division next season.
